How is the CRS Score Calculated?
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the points-based system that the Canadian government uses to assess and score your profile in the Express Entry pool. It evaluates applicants based on core human capital, skill transferability, and additional factors.
The highest possible score is 1,200 points. Periodically, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducts a "draw" and issues Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to candidates who score above a certain threshold.
The "Magic Score" of CLB 9
If you are looking to drastically improve your CRS score without gaining another degree, focus on your language test (IELTS or CELPIP). Hitting a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 9 triggers heavy "Skill Transferability" bonus points when combined with your education and work experience.
For IELTS General Training, CLB 9 requires: Listening: 8.0, Reading: 7.0, Writing: 7.0, Speaking: 7.0.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
If your base score is too low for regular federal draws (usually below 480), a Provincial Nomination is the ultimate trump card. Securing a nomination from a Canadian province instantly adds 600 points to your profile, effectively guaranteeing an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in the next draw.
