Passport Photo Requirements by Country

Every country sets strict passport photo rules for dimensions, background color, and head size. The table below reuses our verified dataset from the visa photo size guide: the USA and India use 2 x 2 inches (600x600 px), the UK uses 45 x 35 mm (350x450 px), Schengen countries use 35 x 45 mm (350x450 px), Canada uses 50 x 70 mm (591x827 px), China uses 33 x 48 mm (390x567 px), Japan uses 45 x 45 mm (450x450 px), and New Zealand accepts a high-resolution 900x1157 px file. Pick your country in the checker above to validate your photo against these exact numbers.

White Background & Head-Size Guidance

White-background tips

  • Stand against a plain white wall or hang a white bedsheet — no patterns, doors, or shadows.
  • Face a window for soft, even light; never use flash straight-on, which causes glare and harsh shadows.
  • Keep the wall shadow-free: stand about half a meter away from the background.
  • The UK also accepts light gray or cream; every other country in the table above requires white.

Head-size & framing guidance

  • Center your head, face the camera directly, eyes open, mouth closed, neutral expression.
  • USA: head 25-35mm (50-69% of photo height). Schengen: head 32-36mm (70-80%). Canada: 31-36mm.
  • Keep the full face, chin, and top of hair inside the frame with no cropping.
  • Remove glasses, head coverings (unless for religious reasons with a full-face view), and anything casting shadows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size photo do I need for my passport or visa?

It depends on the country. The USA and India use 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm, 600x600 px), the UK uses 45 x 35 mm (350x450 px), Schengen countries use 35 x 45 mm (350x450 px), Canada uses 50 x 70 mm (591x827 px), China uses 33 x 48 mm (390x567 px), and Japan uses 45 x 45 mm (450x450 px). Select your country in the checker above for exact requirements.

Must passport photos have a white background?

Almost always. The USA, Canada, Schengen countries, Australia, India, China, Japan and most others require a plain white background. The UK accepts light gray or cream. Take your photo against a plain white wall with even lighting and no shadows for the safest result.

Can I wear glasses in my passport photo?

Remove them if you can. The USA no longer allows eyeglasses in visa photos, and China and the UAE explicitly prohibit glasses. The UK and Schengen countries reject photos with glare, reflections, or frames covering the eyes. Tinted lenses and sunglasses are never allowed.

Can I take a passport photo of my baby at home?

Yes. Lay the baby on a plain white sheet in bright, even light, keep the face fully visible with eyes open and mouth closed, and make sure no hands, toys, or shadows appear. Then use the maker above to resize the photo to your country's exact dimensions.

What is the difference between digital and printed passport photos?

Digital photos are uploaded files that must match exact pixel dimensions (for example 600x600 px for the USA) and format rules such as JPEG under a size limit. Printed photos must match physical dimensions (for example 2 x 2 inches or 35 x 45 mm) at print quality, usually 300 DPI or higher. This tool produces correctly sized digital files you can also print.

How do I check if my photo meets the requirements?

Select your country in the passport photo checker above and upload your photo. The tool runs three checks instantly: exact pixel dimensions, aspect ratio within 2% tolerance, and file size under 5 MB. Each check shows PASS or FAIL with an explanation of what to fix.

How do I resize my photo to the exact passport dimensions?

Upload your photo, select your country, then click Resize to exact size. The tool redraws your photo at the country's exact pixel dimensions (for example 600x600 for the USA or 591x827 for Canada) and gives you a free JPEG download button.

What file size and format should my digital passport photo be?

Most systems accept JPEG files under 5 MB. India e-Visa is stricter, requiring a JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB. If your file is too large, resizing to the exact pixel dimensions with this tool usually brings it under the limit.

Can I smile in my passport photo?

Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed. The USA allows a natural smile without showing teeth, but the UK, Schengen countries, Canada, China, and most others require a fully neutral, non-smiling expression with both eyes open.

How recent must my passport photo be?

US, Schengen, and Japan applications require a photo taken within the last 6 months. Singapore requires one taken within 3 months. Always use a recent photo that shows your current appearance, including hairstyle and facial hair.

Why was my passport photo rejected?

The most common reasons are wrong dimensions, wrong aspect ratio, a non-white background, shadows on the face, smiling, wearing glasses, or an old photo. Run your photo through the checker above to catch dimension and ratio problems before you submit.

Are my photos uploaded to a server when I use this tool?

No. This passport photo maker and checker runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and canvas. Your photos never leave your device, nothing is uploaded to any server, and closing the page removes everything.
