Germany Student Visa Chances for Nigerian Passport 2026
Fees, the VFS Lekki route, blocked-account costs and the published national visa data for applicants in Nigeria
Last updated: October 5, 2026. Germany is the most-searched study destination for Nigerian applicants, so the question we hear most is what are my visa chances for Germany as a Nigerian passport holder. Germany's Federal Foreign Office publishes how many national visas it processed by mission, but not an approval rate for Nigerian students — official nationality-level approval statistics are not published. This page covers the verdict, where to file, documents, costs, timing and the mission data.
The Verdict
Our reference entry codes the Nigerian passport requirement for Germany as visa required, zero visa-free days. Short study, language courses, jobseeker and university placement all need a visa before travel; a national D-visa is issued for stays beyond 90 days and converted into a residence permit in Germany.
Study applications follow the national route rather than the short-stay Schengen route: an appointment, an interview and originals rather than a courier box. VFS Global collects and checks the file but has no say in the outcome — the mission decides.
Who Must Apply and Where
Jurisdiction is set by where you live. The German Consulate General in Lagos is responsible for the southern states; Abuja handles the north and, in certain cases, applicants with special circumstances. An appointment is mandatory and cannot be waived.
Since 25 March 2026 student visa applications — the "B-Student" category — are handled exclusively at VFS Global in Lekki, Lagos, with no submissions accepted directly at the consulate. Applicants attend in person with originals and one photocopy set. German missions state that forgery leads to an automatic refusal and a Schengen-wide entry ban.
Required Documents
University and blocked-account evidence lead the file; the rest proves you will study and then return or continue legally.
| Document | Rule | Why missions refuse it |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Valid well beyond the intended stay, at least two blank pages | Short validity or a full booklet |
| Admission letter | Unconditional offer from a German institution | Conditional offer with conditions unmet |
| Blocked account | 11,904 EUR for 2026, about 992 EUR per month | Short-funded account or an unclear source of funds |
| Academic records | Certificates and transcripts, APS verification not required for Nigerians | Uncertified documents or grades that do not match the offer |
| Language proof | German or English certificate matching the course language | No certificate, or a level below the requirement |
| Health insurance | Cover valid from arrival, roughly 80-160 EUR per month | Travel-only cover or a policy starting after arrival |
| Ties to Nigeria | Family, property or employment evidence and a clear study plan | No reason stated for studying in Germany |
Fees and Costs
The consular fee is set by the mission and paid in naira; the provider fee is separate.
| Item | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| National visa fee | 75 EUR | Set at the mission's own rate in naira, cash or card |
| Fee in naira | About 112,050 NGN | At roughly 1,494 NGN per euro; the mission's own rate applies |
| VFS Global service fee | 17,500 NGN | Student applications at VFS Lekki from 25 March 2026 |
| Blocked account | 11,904 EUR for 2026 | 992 EUR per month, held as proof of funds |
| Health insurance | About 80-160 EUR per month | Required from arrival, not just from enrolment |
| APS | Not required for Nigerian applicants | Check current policy before paying any third party |
The fee is non-refundable even if refused. See our proof of funds guide for how the blocked account compares.
Processing Time
National study visas commonly take four to twelve weeks from a complete file, and the range is wide because the mission may ask the university or the blocked-account provider to confirm details. Appointment availability at VFS Lekki is the first wait, the decision is the second. Start at least three months before term begins.
Approval Odds and Refusal Context
Germany does not publish an approval rate by nationality for student visas, so official statistics for Nigerian applicants are not published. What is published is throughput: 1,978 national visas were processed at the Lagos mission in 2025 and 176 at Abuja. In the wider Schengen picture, Nigerian applicants filed 111,201 short-stay applications in 2024 with a 45.9 percent refusal rate.
Germany itself is not the strictest decider: in the same European Commission dataset Germany refused 13.7 percent of its 2024 decisions and granted multi-entry visas in 89.8 percent of cases. For study files the usual failure points are unverified academic records, a blocked account that does not match the stated funding source, and insurance starting after arrival. See our Schengen rejection rate 2026 page.
Tips to Strengthen the Application
- Fund it cleanly. Show where the blocked-account money came from, line by line, rather than a single lump transfer.
- Match the course. Explain why this programme in Germany rather than a similar one elsewhere.
- Book Lekki early. Since 25 March 2026 every student file goes through VFS Global in Lekki, Lagos.
- Bring originals and copies. Submission requires originals plus one photocopy set, and forgeries trigger a ban.
- Insure from day one. Cover must be valid on arrival; travel-only policies are refused.
- Apply early, avoid agents. The fee is fixed by the mission and no intermediary can influence the decision.
