The Schengen visa allows travel across 27 European countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This checklist covers the standard application process through the embassy of your main destination.

Step 1: Determine main destination

Apply at the embassy of the Schengen country where you will spend the most time. If equal days, apply at the first point of entry. Travel insurance EUR 30K minimum required.

Step 2: Complete application form

Fill the Schengen visa application form. Download from the embassy website or complete online through the portal. Print and sign the completed form.

Step 3: Gather required documents

Valid passport, application form, 2 recent photos (35x45mm), travel insurance, round-trip flight reservation, hotel bookings, bank statements (3 months), employment letter.

Step 4: Purchase travel insurance

Buy Schengen-compliant travel insurance with EUR 30,000 minimum coverage for medical emergencies and repatriation. Must cover all Schengen countries for the entire stay.

Step 5: Book appointment

Schedule at the embassy or consulate or VAC (VFS Global/BLS International/TLScontact). Appointments can fill up weeks in advance. Apply 3-4 months before travel.

Step 6: Attend appointment

Submit application in person if first-time applicant (biometrics required). Biometrics valid for 59 months. Submit all documents in order.

Step 7: Pay visa fee

90 standard. Children 6-12: 45. Children under 6: free. Service fees apply at outsourced centres. Pay by cash or card as accepted.

During appointment

Step 8: Track and collect

Standard processing: 15 calendar days. Can extend to 30-60 days if needed. Track via the embassy or VAC portal. Collect passport or receive by courier.
