US F1 Student Visa Checklist 2026
The F1 student visa requires admission to a SEVP-certified school, I-20 form, SEVIS fee payment, and a successful visa interview. This checklist guides you through every step to study in the US.
Step 1: Get accepted by SEVP school
Receive admission from a US university or college certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Pay the tuition deposit to confirm your place.

Your school issues Form I-20 after you provide financial documents proving you can cover tuition and living costs. Review all details on the I-20 carefully.
1-2 weeksStep 3: Pay SEVIS I-901 fee
Pay the SEVIS fee online at fmjfee.com. Use your SEVIS ID from the I-20 form. Print the payment confirmation receipt for your interview.
30 minStep 4: Complete DS-160 form
Fill the DS-160 online. Select F1 Academic Student as your purpose. Save the barcode number. Same photo requirements as B1/B2.
1 hourStep 5: Pay MRV fee and schedule interview
Pay the visa fee. Schedule your interview at the US embassy or consulate. F1 visas sometimes qualify for expedited appointments.
30 minStep 6: Prepare student documents
Gather I-20, SEVIS receipt, DS-160 confirmation, financial documents, admission letter, transcripts, test scores (TOEFL/IELTS/SAT/GRE), and proof of ties to home country.
3-5 daysStep 7: Attend visa interview
Bring all documents. Be prepared to discuss your study plans, why the US, how you will fund your education, and your intention to return home after studies.
Half dayStep 8: Arrive in US (30 day rule)
F1 students can enter the US up to 30 days before the program start date on the I-20. Notify your school's Designated School Official (DSO) upon arrival.
Before start dateStep 9: Apply for on-campus work (CPT/OPT)
After one academic year, apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) through your DSO. OPT can be applied for up to 90 days before program completion.
