Japan Visa Chances for Indians 2026: Fees & Approval Rate
Fees, appointment rules, documents and the issuance data behind Japanese visas for applicants in India
Last updated: October 5, 2026. Demand from India is one of the fastest-growing Japan visa caseloads in the world, so the question we hear most is what are my visa chances for Japan as an Indian applicant. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes visas issued by nationality, but it does not publish a country-wise refusal or approval rate — official approval statistics for Indian applicants are not published. This page covers the verdict, where to file, documents, costs, timing and the issuance data.
The Verdict
Our reference entry codes the Indian passport requirement for Japan as visa required, zero visa-free days. Tourism, business meetings, family visits and short medical trips all need a visa before you fly. There is no visa on arrival and no visa-free landing for Indian ordinary passports.
Two lawful routes exist. The eVisa covers single-entry tourism for stays of up to 90 days for Indian residents, issued online without a stamp. The sticker visa covers single or multiple entry and is the only route to longer or repeated visits. Multiple-entry visas are normally offered to applicants with a travel record rather than to first-timers.
Who Must Apply and Where
Apply in the jurisdiction where you live, through VFS Global, the official partner of the Japanese missions in India. From 2 March 2026 all applicants must hold an appointment at Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Puducherry or Bengaluru; walk-ins are no longer accepted at those centres. Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata remain consular submission points under their own rules.
Applicants outside India — students, workers or residents of third countries — must apply where they legally live, so check your jurisdiction before booking.
Required Documents
The checklist below is the standard tourist set; the eVisa list is shorter because the form and biometrics are handled online.
| Document | Rule | Why officers reject it |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Valid for at least six months with two blank pages | Under six months' validity or a full booklet |
| Application form | Completed and signed, with one photo attached | Unsigned form or a mismatched photograph |
| Photograph | 45 x 45 mm, white background, taken in the last 3 months | Old photos or a cropped selfie |
| Bank statements | Three months of statements, mandatory, with the income-tax return | Missing ITR, short statement period, sudden deposits |
| Itinerary and bookings | Daily plan, return flight and hotel confirmations | No return ticket or an unverifiable itinerary |
| Employment proof | Leave approval, salary slips or business registration | No job letter and no reason to return |
| Previous visas | Copies of old Japanese or other visas, if any | Unexplained travel history or prior refusals left out |
Fees and Costs
Indian nationals pay one of the lowest tourist visa fees anywhere, plus a separate VFS service charge.
| Item | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single-entry tourist visa | 500 INR | Indian nationals, paid at the centre |
| Multiple-entry tourist visa | 500 INR | Same fee, stricter eligibility |
| VFS Global service fee | 800 INR | Prepaid when you book, total 1,300 INR |
| Other nationalities | 8,650 INR | Standard Japanese rate for non-Indian passport holders |
| Global fee revision | From 1 July 2026 | Raised to about 15,000 / 30,000 yen worldwide; the India rate is unchanged |
| Optional extras | Courier return, photo booth | Never affect the decision |
The fee is non-refundable if you are refused. Compare the wider region in our Japan visa guide.
Processing Time
The Consulate General of Japan in Mumbai publishes an indicative 15 to 17 working days, with a floor of 10 working days from a complete file. Add the appointment wait first: in peak season VFS slots run two to four weeks out. eVisa applications are usually decided faster because there is no document courier, but the consulate can still ask for originals. Apply at least a month before travel.
Approval Odds and Refusal Context
Japan does not publish a refusal rate by nationality, so official approval statistics for Indian applicants are not published. What is published is volume: roughly 180,000 visa applications were submitted by Indian nationals in 2024, and issuances to Indian nationals rose about 40 percent that year. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released its 2025 issuance tables on 23 June 2026, and those tables count visas issued, not decisions refused.
That distinction matters. A rising issuance count alongside fast-growing demand says the missions are processing more files, not that any individual application is likely to be approved. Refusals follow the same pattern seen elsewhere: gaps in the itinerary, unexplained funds, missing ITR and no demonstrable reason to return. Treat any agent promising a guaranteed approval as a warning sign. Read the detail in our Japan visa guide.
Tips to Strengthen the Application
- Attach the ITR. Three months of statements plus the income-tax return are mandatory, not optional.
- Book the appointment early. Mandatory slots at Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Puducherry and Bengaluru fill weeks ahead.
- Show a real itinerary. A day-by-day plan, booked flights and hotels carries weight in a system that publishes no rate data.
- Prove the return. Employment letter with approved leave, plus property or family evidence — see our proving ties guide.
- Consider the eVisa. Single-entry tourism under 90 days can be handled entirely online with no courier.
- Apply early, avoid agents. Fees are fixed and published; nobody can influence a Japanese consular decision.
