Last updated: October 5, 2026. More travellers are turned away at the check-in desk over passport validity than over visas, because the rule is mechanical: the airline's system compares your expiry date with the destination's requirement and refuses the boarding pass when the numbers do not line up. This passport validity checker applies the published rule for more than 90 countries — the 6-month rule, the Schengen 3-month rule, and the shorter exceptions — to the dates you give it, then tells you the exact date your passport must be valid to, how many days of margin you have left, whether you have enough blank pages, and the date you should start your renewal. Country coverage follows the destination list used across this site, so results match our visa calculator. For the renewal paperwork itself start with our US passport renewal guide for 2026.

Quick answer: Most countries in Asia, the Middle East and much of Africa and Latin America want your passport valid for six months beyond your return date. The Schengen Area wants three months beyond your departure date (and a passport issued within the last 10 years). The UK and Australia ask only that it covers your stay. Almost everyone wants at least two blank pages. If the checker says "renew before travel", start now: routine renewal takes 4-6 weeks and expedited takes 2-3.

How the 6-Month Passport Validity Rule Works

The 6-month passport rule is a simple buffer: your passport must still be valid for a set period after you are due to leave, so that an overstay, a reroute or a delayed flight does not leave you holding an expired document. Because the clock runs past your trip, a passport that looks fine on paper can fail. Leave on 10 January and return on 20 January for a six-month country and your passport must be valid to about 20 July — an expiry in June fails even though it is seven months away when you book.

The measurement start point differs by country. Most six-month jurisdictions count from the date of arrival; Schengen counts three months beyond the date you depart. This checker takes your travel date, adds your trip length to get the return date, applies the destination's buffer to that return date, and compares it with your expiry. That is the conservative reading, so a passport that passes here will also satisfy the arrival-date version of the rule.

Validity is only one of three checks border officers and airlines run. The others are blank pages for stamps and visas, and whether the document is a machine-readable or biometric ePassport when you are entering under a visa-waiver scheme. The tool reports all three, and separately tells you the date to start renewing.

Countries That Require 6 Months Validity

The six-month requirement is concentrated in Asia, the Middle East and large parts of Africa and Latin America, and it is the rule airlines apply by default when their system has no country-specific instruction. The table lists representative destinations from this site's country data; every one of them is selectable in the checker above.

India is worth singling out: entry generally requires a passport valid at least six months from the date of arrival, with two blank pages, and the same pairing of six months plus two pages is common in China. Where a rule is not verified for a destination we plan for six months, which is the safer assumption and rarely costs more than an early renewal.

The Schengen 3-Month Rule (and What Else It Covers)

Schengen is the big exception and the one most often misremembered. The requirement is a passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area, plus a passport issued within the previous ten years with enough blank pages for the sticker. Return on 11 March and you need validity to about 11 June — not September. The ten-year issue rule catches out travellers who renewed early and hold a long, barely-used book that was issued more than a decade ago.

Countries With a Shorter Buffer or None at All

Shorter rules are real and worth knowing, because they save renewals you do not need. The United Kingdom requires only that your passport is valid for the whole duration of your stay, and Australia asks for validity for the period of your travel in and out of the country — no six-month buffer at all. Hong Kong wants one month beyond your planned departure, South Africa wants 30 days beyond it plus two blank pages, and several destinations simply require the passport to cover the visit.

United KingdomValid for the duration of the stayAirline connections may apply a stricter rule
AustraliaValid for the period of travel in and outThe passport you used on the visa application must still be the one you carry

Everything else in the checker defaults to six months, which is the requirement most often published and the one most often enforced at the desk. If your destination is not listed, assume six months and confirm with the carrier.

United States: Six Months With a List of Exemptions

Entering the United States, the general rule is that your passport must be valid for six months beyond the date you will exit. It is not universal: the Department of Homeland Security maintains a list of nationalities exempt from the six-month rule who need only validity for their intended stay, and CBP refreshed that list on 18 December 2025. Most Western passports sit on it, which is why a British or German traveller can enter the US on four months' validity while a traveller from a non-listed country cannot. Visa Waiver Program travellers have a second condition: since 2016 the passport must be an ePassport with an integrated chip for ESTA travel.

Visas are a separate layer. A valid US visa inside an expired passport is still usable if you carry both documents, but a B1/B2 application is assessed against the passport you hold at the time of the interview — and visa appointment waits in India currently run from about six months to nearly a year. Check the US visa appointment wait time tool before you plan around a visa you have not yet secured.

Blank Pages and ePassport Requirements

Two blank pages is the number to plan around. There is no universal treaty fixing it, but Schengen consulates expect two pages free for the visa sticker, India and China expect space for entry and exit stamps, and Kenya lists two blank pages as a condition of entry. Countries can and do refuse admission when the book is full, because a passport without space for the arrival stamp cannot be lawfully processed.

ePassport means a passport with an integrated circuit chip, marked by the small camera symbol on the cover. It is compulsory for travel under the US Visa Waiver Program, tied to K-ETA eligibility in South Korea, and required for visa-exemption entry under some agreements — Thailand's exemption for certain nationalities is one, and it is recorded as such in this site's visa data. A machine-readable passport remains the global floor; if your book predates the chip and you are travelling visa-free, verify the requirement before you book.

Renewal Timeline: When to Start

Validity problems are solved by starting early, and the numbers below are the ones to work backwards from. The checker gives you a renew-by date — eight weeks before your passport must be valid — which absorbs processing plus mailing both ways. If you also need a visa, add the appointment queue on top: a US visitor visa from India can take six months or more, so a passport expiring in a year may already be too close.

ServiceUS passport processing timeStart by (before you need it)
Routine by mail or online4-6 weeks (online 6-8 weeks)8-10 weeks ahead, plus mailing time each way
Expedited (+$60)2-3 weeks4-5 weeks ahead, plus mailing time

Costs are covered in our passport renewal fee calculator: an adult book renewal is $130 by mail or online, $190 with expedited service, and the routine door-to-door time realistically runs 6-10 weeks once mailing is included. If you are travelling in the next two months and your validity is short, expedited is cheaper than a missed flight.

Passport Validity FAQs

Which countries require a passport valid for 6 months?
The six-month rule is most common across Asia, the Middle East and much of Africa and Latin America. Representative examples include India, China, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Brazil, Peru, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. Where no shorter rule is verified we plan for six months, because that is the figure airlines most often apply at check-in.
Does the Schengen Area require 6 months passport validity?
No. Schengen states require your passport to be valid for at least three months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen Area, and to have been issued within the previous ten years. A ten-day trip returning on 11 March therefore needs validity to about 11 June. Because the calculation runs from your departure date, not your arrival date, trip length matters.
Does the United Kingdom require 6 months passport validity?
No. Official UK entry guidance states your passport must be valid for the whole duration of your stay, with no extra buffer. Airlines occasionally apply their own stricter rule for connecting flights, so a passport that technically meets the UK requirement can still cause a problem at a transfer hub.
How many blank pages does my passport need?
There is no single international number, but two blank visa or stamp pages is the standard most frequently enforced. Schengen consulates expect two pages free for the visa sticker, India and China expect two pages for entry and exit stamps, and Kenya states two blank pages as an entry condition. Assume two pages and check your destination's travel advice before you fly.
Does my passport need to be an ePassport?
Not for every destination, but for an increasing number of visa-free and authorisation schemes, yes. Travel under the US Visa Waiver Program and ESTA requires an ePassport with an integrated chip, K-ETA eligibility for South Korea is tied to chip passports, and Thailand's visa-exemption entry for several nationalities requires an ePassport. If your passport has no chip symbol on the cover, check the visa-waiver rules before booking.
How early should I renew my passport?
Start the renewal about eight weeks before the date your passport must be valid, and earlier if you need visa appointments as well. A practical trigger is to renew once the expiry date falls within your travel date plus the buffer your destination demands. For a December trip to a six-month country, a passport expiring the following June is already too close.
How long does passport renewal take in 2026?
For a US passport book, routine processing takes 4-6 weeks, expedited service 2-3 weeks for an extra $60, online renewal 6-8 weeks, and in-person agency service 2-3 days with proof of travel within 14 days. Mailing time adds up to two weeks each way, so a routine renewal should be started two to three months before you need the book in hand.
Does the 6-month rule count from arrival or departure?
Most six-month countries measure from the date you arrive, while Schengen measures three months beyond the date you leave. This tool adds your trip length to your travel date and then applies the country's buffer to that return date, which is the more conservative reading and protects you either way.
Do I need 6 months passport validity to enter the United States?
As a general rule yes: passports must be valid for six months beyond the date you will exit the United States. There are important exceptions. CBP maintains a list of nationalities exempt from the six-month rule who only need validity for their intended stay, updated most recently on 18 December 2025, which covers many Western passports. Visa Waiver Program travellers must also hold an ePassport.
Can an airline refuse boarding if my passport meets the entry rule?
Yes. Carriers check entry rules against the Timatic database at check-in and are fined for carrying a passenger who cannot be admitted, so they routinely refuse anyone whose passport fails the system rule even when a border officer might have been flexible. This is the main reason travellers are turned away with a passport that looked acceptable at home.
What happens if my passport expires while I am abroad?
You will need an emergency travel document from your nearest embassy or consulate, and in most countries you must also report to local immigration to regularise your stay. It is slow and expensive. Renewing before you reach the point where validity dips below your destination's requirement avoids the problem entirely.
Is this passport validity check official?
No. It is a free planning tool that applies published validity rules to the dates you enter. Entry decisions rest with border officers and the requirements change, so confirm the current rule with your airline and the destination's official travel advice before you travel.

How We Fact-Checked These Rules

Rules were checked on October 5, 2026 against published sources: the European Commission and EU entry guidance for the three-month Schengen rule and the ten-year issue rule, UK entry guidance for the duration-of-stay rule, the Australian Government's passport validity statement, New Zealand's NZeTA validity guidance, Hong Kong and South Africa entry requirements, US CBP's six-month validity exemption update dated 18 December 2025, and this site's own visa data files for destination coverage and ePassport notes. Renewal times and fees come from our US passport renewal guide. Requirements change without notice and can differ by nationality, visa status and length of stay.

Disclaimer: This checker gives an estimate for planning only. It applies commonly published validity rules to the dates you enter and cannot see your nationality, visa status, onward travel or your carrier's own boarding policy. Airlines may apply stricter rules than border officers, and rules differ by nationality. Always confirm the current requirement with your airline and the destination government before you travel.
